Insomniac Games, the PlayStation first-party studio behind the recent Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine, has been hacked, with sensitive information currently held hostage in a brazen digital heist.
Word comes to us from Cyber Daily (thanks, Eurogamer), which reports that a ransomware group named Rhysidia is claiming responsibility, providing proof-of-hack documents. This includes details on the in-development Wolverine, internal emails, files, personal documents like scans of employee passports, and who knows what else. One of the documents reportedly belongs to Spider-Man actor Yuri Lowenthal, who should probably change his passwords as soon as possible.
Rhysida has set a seven-day deadline to pay the ransom before the group publishes its ill-gotten gains online. In case Sony doesn't want to play ball, Rhysida is putting the data up for auction, with the price starting at the princely sum of 50 bitcoins, worth around $2 million.
Sony has published a statement: "We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack. We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted."
Where's Spider-Man when you need him? What do you think of this latest breach and Rhysidia's supervillain-esque antics? Let us know in the comments section below.

Why don't they do something useful and go for corrupt politicians instead smh
@RawnDawn
Maybe because corrupt politicians in this day and age get away with basically everything. If anything digging up their dirty laundry just makes them more appealing to certain demographics.
This plan is bad. Sony won’t pay, and 2m is too high for anybody else. In the end, these criminals will publish all documents for free. I hope these people will get caught.
They always act like they cant get caught. Never once has a ransom hacker gotten away.
1. This should be the last mention of that pathetic bunch of criminals on this website, if you have any integrity.
2. Do not report any leaks and don't report about other news sites reporting. Limit their criminal act by acting like professionals.
3. I think that users comments like "came here to see the leaks" are to be deleted as being inappropriate.
I hope this is self-explanatory. Some clicks are not worth chasing.
This is why we can't have nice things!
@Yaycandy The NHS WannaCry ransomware group weren’t caught. Suspected of being North Korean, sure, but there were no arrests and we’re still not much closer to finding out anything other than the NHS cyber team are underfunded and American NSA tools fall into the wrong hands more than they really should.
@EfYI welcome to push Square 👍
Obviously very bright people.
Obviously very dumb people.
@RawnDawn
Maybe they could help Boris find his missing WhatsApp messages.
Absolute scum.
Push Square, if they leak any info about Wolverine please don't publish the details or suggest where the details can be found🙏
So sick and tired of these scummy hackers ruining everything.
Yep as others have said, dont give this story any oxygen here. Not interested in giving it any exposure.
First and foremost, I hope that Sony and Insomniac are able to quickly identify the full nature of the leaks and the risks to personel and put the security and wellbeing of their staff front and centre
This WILL delay the games release date now as insomniac will want change things in case the hack goes public.
Feel sorry the people with personal stuff hacked. Not good.
Seriously you have that skill go and do something positive work to improve Linux windows or iOS geez.
The world is filled with scumbags. Sony and Insomiac should have done better.
This is why cybersecurity business is very on demand and hiring for big paychecks, from what I heard. Best cybersecurity specialists are former hackers anyway.
@RawnDawn Mostly because individuals, including most politicians, can't afford to pay this sort of ransom, at least with businesses there is a chance to get a payday. I suspect many smaller leaks and deals are handled out of the public eye to save face.
In my province several hospitals have had their computers locked by hackers slowing things to a halt. Cancer patients having to drive 4-6 hours away for treatments because of ransom attacks. I worry about everything going digital.
@RawnDawn Because politicians will request they are found and dealt with, and they CAN be found, Sony couldn’t give two craps about hackers and never has, two massive hacks and customer and employee data being stolen should tell you that. No system is impenetrable but Sonys seem very weak on security, and they don’t prosecute anyone and prefer to settle anything out of court. And thus they become an easy target.
Damn hackers!
Do a Elon Musk on the hackers.Tell them if you have the info release it, As far as the ransom money "Go F yourself"
@PixelDragon we've never lived in a democracy. Politicians and academics started saying that decades ago and it was a lie then as it is now. We live in a constitutional republic (which has its own share of problems). I don't mean to come across as a d*** its just a small pet peeve of mine when people say that. Now back to gaming commentary, couldn't they have picked a studio like Fntastic or a developer like EA?? I'm kidding, wouldn't want anyone to be at the mercy of hack.
@PixelDragon Used to being correct....
Wouldn't it be some funny turn of events if Microsoft's Xbox team is doing all the hacking to try and stifle Sony's PS5 successes in literally crushing Xbox?
I DO NOT condone hacking like this and I think this is really sh*tty, especially this studio who delivers true quality games. But in a comical sense, that would be hilarious.
I hope everyone involved goes to jail.
I work in IT and no matter what technology or process I implement, an end user will always be an uncontrollable weak link. I feel bad for all involved and hope for the worst to the culprits.
@Th3solution it's insomniac who were breached.
@EfYI "Do not report any leaks and don't report about other news sites reporting. Limit their criminal act by acting like professionals."
This site isn't running on good wishes and fairy dust rainbows 🙄 them not reporting on it while every other website does would be unfair to the people running this site that are trying to make a living.
Unless they are getting personal checks from Sony and Insomniac they should be reporting on absolutely everything that's going on in the gaming world, sticking your head in the sand won't help anyone including Insomniac.
@ChromaticDracula Flat earth level conspiracy thinking.
bitcoins and all those crypto encourage hackers and even state-sponsored attacks. NHS UK was held for ransom not long ago.
@EfYI Apologies and I have deleted my comment about “clicking on the article to see the Wolverine leaks.” It was said with tongue-(mostly)-in-cheek. I was curious just like everyone else as to what’s going on, as I assume you were too, although perhaps you clicked the article solely to express your thoughts there.
My biggest curiosity, however, isn’t so much about what Insomniac is up to and whatever emails they got about Wolverine’s development, rather I am a little worried about the safety of my own PSN information and the integrity of the Sony cybernetic infrastructure. The PSN outage of 2011 is enough to give me a high level of anxiety and then the other recent hack involving Sony employees compounds those concerns.
I realize, as @SirEvilJebus states, that it’s an alleged hack on Insomniac and not Sony per se, but in my experience the company who writes the checks is usually overseeing the cybersecurity of its subsidiaries. I’m no expert but other large companies seem to function that way. If Sony is not involved in the security of the first party studios then perhaps they need to be.
God I really hate ***** like dis 😒
@S1ayeR74 Really is a shame Sony haven't beefed up their security 😒
